👋🏽 thanks for stopping by :)

i am a civic data scientist, writer, and professor. i work at the intersection of inequality, power, and mathematics.

Officially, I am the Professorial Lecturer in Quantitative Methods and Data Journalism at American University’s School of Communication, where I oversee how we teach emerging storytellers about the world of data. I also co-teach Programming and Data for Policymakers at The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

At American University, I hold a dual-appointment as Data Editor at The Investigative Reporting Workshop — where I founded & run the Limit Lab, and where my students and I create datasets that explore societal inequality. I am also a Faculty Affiliate at the Antiracist Research & Policy Center, Faculty Fellow at the Center for Data Science in the School of Public Affairs, and the Faculty Advisor for AU’s chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association.

When I am not on campus, I serve as a Data Reporter building The Accountability Project at The Center for Public Integrity & support data-driven racial justice work at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights.

My first book, So, You Are Bad at Math…, is forthcoming early 2024.
