i am a civic data scientist, writer, and professor. i work at the intersection of inequality, power, and mathematics.

Officially, I am the Professorial Lecturer in Quantitative Methods and Data Journalism at American University’s School of Communication, where I oversee how we teach emerging storytellers about the world of data. I also co-teach Programming and Data for Policymakers at The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

I am also Data Editor at The Investigative Reporting Workshop, American University’s nonprofit and independent newsroom.

When I am not on campus, I support data-driven work at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, amongst other places.
